Christian Ehwald
Honorary Music Director
Born in 1953, Christian Ehwald completed studies in Berlin before advancing his training under Arvīds Jansons and Mariss Jansons at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In 1979, he was awarded laureate at the Herbert von Karajan International Conducting Competition.
From 1981 to 1988, Ehwald served as Chief Conductor of the Jenaer Philharmonie. During this period, he initiated a significant collaboration with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, conducting multiple premieres and performances. He also led the Staatskapelle Berlin on concert tours throughout Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.
Christian Ehwald has guest-conducted all major German orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, S chsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Dresdner Philharmonie, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, WDR Sinfonieorchester K ln, and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. He maintained frequent engagements with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Internationally, he has conducted leading ensembles across Europe, the Americas, Japan, Korea, and China, appearing in television broadcasts with the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Prague Symphony Orchestra, and Bavarian Radio Symphony.
As General Music Director of Theater Magdeburg and Chief Conductor of Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra (1998-2003), Christian Ehwald oversaw artistic operations. Appointed Professor at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin in 2002, he later served as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (2008-2016). He currently holds the title of Honorary Music Director with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
