Academy of Shenzhen Chamber Music, SZSO



Founded in 2024 under the artistic framework of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of Shenzhen Chamber Music marks the city’s first professional chamber ensemble. It does not seek to impress through numbers, but through something far more elusive: the quiet, almost telepathic understanding among its players. That, after all, is the very essence of chamber music.
The core members bring with them a wealth of experience from leading international orchestras and teaching institutions: LU Wei, life-long principal of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin; ZHOU Qi, life-long violinist of the Munich Philharmonic and principal violinist of the Munich Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra; JIN Zhenhong, director of the Academy of Shenzhen Chamber Music, principal violist of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, former life-long principal violist of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and visiting professor at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music; NIE Jiapeng, one of China’s foremost cellists and a graduate supervisor at both the Xinghai Conservatory and the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen); Karen KOCHARYAN, principal cellist of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Khachaturian Trio; and YANG Liuyin, principal violist of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble also keeps its formation fluid, expanding or contracting as the repertoire demands from a simple duet to a small chamber orchestra.
When it comes to repertoire, Academy of Shenzhen Chamber Music draws no hard lines across centuries. It moves freely from the core literature of the Baroque and Classical eras to the exploratory voices of contemporary composers, jazz, and pops music. Anchored by the resources and platform of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble strives for a musical language that honours tradition without retreating into it, and embraces the present without losing its focus - rigorous yet never rigid, open yet never diffuse.
